Agniya Tolstokulakova explores the world around her in search of beauty in the ordinary. As a visual anthropologist, she investigates the tension between connecting to and disconnecting from reality. Although her subjects are often representative, she alters colors as a way of questioning the rules. She believes that the key aspect of her practice is observing and then reinventing “the reality”, familiar landscapes and objects, making them abstract and ambiguous, which lets her capture the essence of a moment rather than realistically rendered composition.
Her process can be described as experimental and meditative. Often not knowing what the outcome will be, Ms. Tolstokulakova simply focuses on the therapeutic process. This approach keeps her curious as she examines all the possibilities while celebrating escapism.
